Rule of Thirds Ideas

The Rule of Thirds is one of the fundamental guidelines that many follow in photography, painting and all types of visual arts. The basic guideline is that you divide the image into thirds both horizontally and vertically resulting in 9 sections. Then you use that division by placing your subject, strong lines and focal points in the image on those divisions. This creates tension and motion in the photo.

Let’s take a look at the photographer below. In the first photo, he’s centered looking to the right. This is a decent photo. It documents the moment that the photographer was there and taking photos.

If you look at the second photo, however, placing the photographer roughly on the one third line on the left hand side taking the photo to the right gives a lot more action and depth to the photo.

For this challenge, take a look at your framing of the photos and see if you can add depth, motion and action to your shot by framing it correctly according to the rule of thirds.
